In 2012, I lived in Papua New Guinea for a while. PNG has an abundance of war wrecks, and I encountered everything from G4M Betties to the Kokai Maru. I searched for wrecks in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand as well, but found close to none. A few of these photos I took in PNG, the rest I took at a family-run war 'museum' - basically a bunch of priceless war relics dumped into somebody's yard - on Biak island, Indonesia. The last image is of LST-722, which I happened upon and identified. I have since explored her wreck and corresponded with veteran Stanely Yokell, who served aboard the 722 during the war. I apologize in advance about the quality of some of these, as my camera had focusing issues.
G4M Betty, Rabaul.
View from a Japanese tunnel, one of thousands of such tunnels around Rabaul; this ventilation hole looks out over a cliff a few hundred feet above the ocean.
Using a hookah to explore the wreck of a B5N Kate, off New Hanover island. Very intact, the hinomaru was still visible on the wings.
Now photos from the Biak museum. You see what I mean when I say they've dumped a bunch of war relics onto their yard and put up a sign saying 'museum'. Best museum I've ever been to.
Anti-aircraft guns, artillery shells, bombs.
A few bayonets, a flare gun, an M1911A1, and a Nambu.
A Japanese mountain gun of some sort, I'm not sure which model.
Grenades, magazines, mortar rounds.
Medicine vials, more grenades and mortar rounds.
LST-722.
