Hobbit director confirms trilogy! Peter Jackson has announced the Hobbit will be extended to three movies the first of which is due this December.

Long live LOTR in my opinion but is this perhaps a step too far? What does everyone think?

I lurk on the hobbit imdb forums a lot and heard rumour of this. Very sad to hear its true.

I'm assuming the 3rd film will bridge the gap between the Hobbit and Lotr - will probably include the rise of the witchking, the fall of moria - the return of sauron to Morder etc - all those things sound cool but it isn't really 'the hobbit' - if they called the film 'the appendices' it would be fine a guess :p.

Actually that would be quite cool. I was imagining them just padding out the Hobbit with the inclusion of the white council and necromancer. So something like:

Part 1: Departure, Rivendell and capture by the goblins, the finding of the ring
Part 2: Boern, travelling through mirkwood, fall of the necromancer and capture by the elves of Mirkwood.
Part 3: Fall of Smorg, battle of the five armies and aftermath

Yeah maybe, but that just isn't enough material to drag out over 3 2 and a half hour films. I mean the hobbit book itself is smaller than fellowship of the ring and idea that they can spread it over three films is silly.

I'm almost sure they will have Smaugs demise and battle of five armies in the second film, I don't think the audience would have the patience to wait 3 films to even see the dragon lol. After all the second film is called there and back again so one would assume the main Hobbit storyline would be wrapped up there.

Are the titles remaining the same? I assumed they would change those. I suspect you are probably right about the way it will be broken down but I suspect the Hobbit story is similar in terms of months compared to the whole War of the Ring.

I think the titles are remaining the same at least - but it could change I guess. Been reading up on this a bit and its heavily rumoured the 3rd wont be a bridging film and will be the final parts of the hobbit book as you said it might be. So the second film ending with smaugs death would be preferable to me. I don't want to wait till 2014 to see Smaug and I'm sure no one else does.

Then the 3rd film will naturally be, the battle of five armies and the return trip. There was also another rumoured side plot that might have been made up or from the appendices of the Necromancer reserecting Smaug from he depths of Lake town for various sinister means :p.

I think the time scale length of the hobbit and lord of the rings is similar - Bilbos journey maybe a tad shorter,

Resurrecting Smaug? I seriously hope they don't - that would destroy the LOTR franchise for me!

I still reckon it's possible spin out the Hobbit to three films without adding too much given that the whole book is more engaging than LOTR in my opinion. It doesn't have large stretches which are just a grind to read ;)

Story decisions aside, I wonder how Martin Freeman is going to turn out. I think he's a great actor and one of the best choices they could have made in casting Bilbo, but I wonder how Americans will take to him. I fear they'll tone down his "Britishness," if that makes any sense.

As for making another trilogy, I would have expected no less. Based on how the past 3 performed at the box office, sequels would have been inevitable. In a way, it's better they're doing it the same way as before, so Jackson can get things they way he wants it. The alternative probably would have been something like Harry Potter or Star Wars where some films are clearly weaker than others, directors/cast change, story doesn't follow, music changes (big problem for me in the HP series), etc.

I completely agree that if it was to be done its far better to spin out the Hobbit into a trilogy rather than come up with some half-baked intermediate film(s) not directed by Peter Jackson.

Just realised this also means a whole extra soundtrack :) Fingers crossed that Howard Shore is doing them again.

Cool vid, managed to watch bits and pieces from the 50 minute sneak preview here and there a few days back. Witch Kings tomb was very cool scene to see, so atmospheric - reminds me of the dungeon missions in Eldar Scrolls :).

Also watched a clip showing Stephen Fry as the master of lake-town - really great clips but cant seem to find a working link for them any-more.

But to be honest though I'm a a little sick of not being able to see the dragon, Was expecting a trailer on the 24th and at-least have a glimpses or a sound-bite of Smaug talking, but we didn't get much in the way of that :(.

There's more eye candy around? I shall have to go hunting! Can't believe a 50 minute preview slipped under my radar.

I'm waiting for extended edition :)
Peter Jackson is a great producer and director. It's one of the best with James Cameron (Avatar).

From what I hear though Jackson is an awful lot nicer to work for ;) They both get the results though.

I'm also looking forward to getting my hands on the extended edition which I think is due Q4 2013 (around the time of the next film).

The newest one i scheduled for the 11th December 2013 at least, really looking forward to it!

Then again, I wonder how the 3rd and last one would be like - as I've read the book and I can't really see what they can possibly add?
