• Welcome to the Vanguard Community

These forums date back to the game's origins as the Crysis mod Traction Wars. Over the years the game and internet habits have evolved and discord.gg/vanguardww2 is now the principle home of the community.

The team continue to read and reply to posts here, but we can be contacted more quickly on Discord.

Just a cute joke of a suggestion

Give playeras the ability to surrender. such as hitting F5 and your guy drops everything including ammo and says " i surrender " or " Ich gebe auf " in game so the other team will hear it.

This could make for an interesting game type that players agree on where someone gives up on the allies team and the germans have 15 minutes to set up their defences and the allies have to fight their way to their man and save him.

A mod for half life 2 called resistance and liberation had a function where you press g I believe and you drop whatever weapon you had in hand. Keep pressing it and you would eventually drop all your weapons. From what I was told that's actually a simple thin to program. From their just make a basic animation where the character puts both hands up and have a sound wave play. Again I was told it was easy to implement that in a mod.

being a veteran of RnL I can tell you people surrendered a lot and more often then not we had fun holding them prisoner. Infact whole matches were made with the idea of saving one guy. The one guy would even pick up a German rifle to survive the journey back. Yes some guys would be ass hats and simply kill the prisoner and ruin the game but you simply kick or ban the guy and keep those who actually want to be part of the skirmish and that was around 90% of the RnL community

What I really like about what you did was making new rules in side an already fixed rule-set or game in a game. Which I think makes some games really good as you can make it your own experience.

Reminds me a bit of the presentation of Dean Hall (creator of DayZ) during EGX who told about how to create a truly unique and unpredictable game/experience by giving the player the tools to do so - as in DayZ. Don't know if this applies easily to Traction Wars but anyway very interesting to think about.

Being the prisoner a few times myself I loved trying to run away cause in RnL you ha this function that if you were shot in the leg you ran super slow so it played well. It was fun to try and punch the guards too

It would be a cool "VIP" game mode, but I'm still not sure how it would play out in an genuine online match.

Interesting, but you must beware of troublemakers (trolls) especially in a game that strives for realism. However, that brings up the good idea of hostage rescue missions (like others mentioned above), which did happen in WW2 such as Operation Halyard.

Well just as an example from my games. A friend of mine owned a server and he had a steam group for it. he invited everyone who played on his server no matter what. So he would go on the group and post a notice saying " this friday at 8 eastern i will be hosting a hostage rescue followed by a realism skirmish. "

So people would join the server. yes its hard to get away from trolls its inevitable. So he would ban instantly even his own admins who would troll. To show hes not joking. But with in about 15 minutes the teams were picked the ncos had their orders and the prisoner was selected.

The skirmish round was merely the germans got 15 minutes to set up defence while the allies built an attack strategy. you always moved with your squad though. The rule of death. if you die you had to wait at spawn until your whole squad and your squad leader were spawned. So if the squad leader was still out you had to wait. this meant it was harder for your team to move up. forces lonewolves to stay with the squad.

The death rule more often then not applied to the hostage rescue as well.

Edit: forgot to mention on the skirmish we had a rule that the germans could not retake lost points. the allies had to capture them in order.

I can imagine walking around with my Luger, finding a friendly that's trying to surrender, and than give him what he deserves lol.

Not that hard animation or coding wise, but ethics are bothering me.
Would it be acceptable to allow guys to shoot surrendering soldiers for fun?

Sure it happened alot in the war. Ever watch Letters from Iwojima? theres a scene where these two japanese boys were being held prisoner by an american and when fighting started again the american got annoyed with watching them so he shot them both so he can get back to the fight.

Band of Brothers near the end the french soldiers execute two german prisoners.

I know some of it might be fictional but in the long run making this game in any way shape of form sensitive to people who cant handle that will, in my opinion, be detrimental to the realism of the game.

The more grewsome the better i say. mind you i understand not having gore and giblits is to save on processing power. Same with destructable enviroments

You must understand, he is talking about killing your own friends or fellow soldiers, not just normal prisoners of war.

Sometimes it is appalling what people who have not been in war think of surrendering troops. And even more so, think of those who did execute men trying to surrender.

It's a war crime people, and it is cold-blooded murder. It will not be ingame. The end point of the discussion is simply that TW is not an RPG, it is a tactical simulater. There is no gameplay place for surrendering, and there is never a place for war crimes.

oh lol yeah id say leave that in the game either way. ive been in games where we hear someone surrender and we foam at the mouth shouting kill the traitor, kill the coward. its all good fun though. normally we dont find the guy but if we do we shoot him and move on
