News Update #48: Water You Looking At!

Stepping away from our recent trend of less common weapons in last update's reveal of the Lee Enfield No.1 SMLE we stay with the British Army and present the Vickers Machine Gun by the newest member of the team [TWDEV] Chillydog12345.

The Vickers Machine Gun is one of the most iconic machine guns of the 20th Century. Having served throughout World War One as one of the great contributors to the mass slaughter in the trenches, the Vickers continued its illustrious service with British and Commonwealth forces throughout the Second World War. Despite attempts to replace it with more modern and mobile air-cooled general purpose machine guns like the Besa, it's reliability and weight of fire continued to win out.

Capable of laying down 450 rounds per minute, the Vickers was not about to win any awards for rapid fire for a World War Two machine gun. It made up for this in weight of fire. As it was water cooled the Vickers required very few barrel changes, with fire being continuous until ammunition or water had been expended, whichever came first. Indeed, on the Somme in 1916, there is one account of the 100th Machine Gun Company having fired it's 10 Vickers Guns for over 12 hours without a single stoppage, a testament to the incredible reliability of the Vickers and water-cooled machine guns in general. It was also capable of indirect fire, using observers and specialist sights to place killing zones out to ranges of 4,500 meters, creating deadly zones for those who happened to stray into an observer's sight.

Despite the Vicker's weight and increased obsolescence in comparison to modern GPMGs, it would serve throughout the Korean War and was not replaced in the British army until 1968. The Vickers, like many other World War One weapons, continues to serve throughout conflicts in Africa and the Middle East amongst militias and national armies.

My notes/questions:

1. What Roughbeak said pretty much ^^
2. Can it be carried around?
2A. Would we have to set the whole thing up?
3. Can we run out of water?

if we do, need to have animation of peeing back into the container :)

To put it lightly:

It took the Mk I 600 rounds of continuous fire to boil the water in the jacket, evaporating at a rate of 1.5 pints (0.852 L) per 1,000 [SUP][11][/SUP]rounds.

This means it would take around 5000 rounds to evaporate all the water, or 11+ minutes of continuous firing. Considering the water, when fully evaporated, would be poured back in, and reused over and over (with some loss to steam), there is no conceivable way you would ever fire enough ammo in the game to equal total water usage. ;)

i still like my idea....

Holy moley! Great job [MENTION=1593]Chillydog12345[/MENTION]!

So continuous fire until repositioning will be possible, at least, until our ammo runs out?

Nice model we've got here!
Can't wait to "put my hands" on this one, to provide offensive or defensive fire depending on the situation.

And don't underestimate us on the battlefield!

Good God, I'm picturing everyone on the battlefield with a Vickers, just holding the left-mouse button down continuously for the last 10 or so minutes, before the possible "pee-in-the-tank"-animation comes forth.

What a sight, haha!

no other game would be able to think that up :)

Sweet! Can't wait to use that; most games just skip over the "older" equipment, or the bulkier weapons like this. I'd love to have this if I was fighting on the defensive though.

Looking good :)
So I assume these will be found in bunkers and the like? I don't think this is a weapon that can be carried around easily since first of all, you need a team, and to set it up properly would take longer then just a few seconds.

It could just be me, but it might be better to have just a "static" Vickers as of now. Rather than going through the work animating the deploying part - just a thought.

The way I see it is because I'm not a big fan of newbies deploying it in obscure places (I see it again and again in Forgotten Hope 2). :D

I rather suspect (as with the Lafette MG34/ Lafayette MG42 mount) the vickers will be a static weapon, something we could spawn in a map at random defensive positions ... that way ... that one road on the map won't be camped all the time (also ... that way, it wont be quite so easy as dropping a mortar round in the same spot)

That there is a world class idea! Adds something dynamic to the map too
