Beutewaffen of the Wehrmacht: Part One

It has been a while since we published a "proper" News Update. We are currently focused on refining the current build, not as exciting as fresh development but a necessary and important part of the process. We look forward to returning to a regular update schedule as we move into the next phase of development. Meanwhile we would like to share one of the more unusual weapons of Traction Wars; the French Ruby pistol.

The German Army in Normandy was, in many ways, one of the anachronisms of World War 2. King Tiger tanks served alongside Panzer 1Cs. Halftracks served alongside a great many more draft horses and wagons that were little changed from the days of C18th Fredrick the Great. The small arms situation was little different with many German divisions being armed with the most recent and best weaponry the fatherland could offer. Yet many others going into combat against the Western Allies were armed with little more than captured stocks of foreign weaponry. Many garrison and fortress divisions, as well as re-formed infantry and Panzer divisions, were armed with French and Czech arms. This may be due to lack of anything else to offer or, for the fortress/garrison units, a preference for French munitions rather than rely on already strained German industry. So the German infantry man in Normandy was likely to be shooting French weapons against allied troops.

One of the main areas where Germans poached foreign weaponry was side arms. Pistols, a common weapon for the German infantryman since World War One, were always in high demand as almost all German support troops carried one including machine gunners, artillery, anti-tank troops, and all Fallschirmjager. The Ruby Pistol had been developed by the French military during World War One, and was a basic 9 round 7.65mm pocket pistol. The Germans not only used the large captured stocks, but even produced another 23,000 of the Ruby to help meet their own needs. The Ruby would mostly serve out its time in the French garrisons, where it was easy to supply soldiers with ammuniton needed from operational French munitions factories.

Very interesting. Great model as always! What I love about TW is that rare models find its way in! :)

Question: who modeled and textured this favorite of Ruby of mine?

Aww guys, right on! Though the gun design seems a bit bland in the first place, you guys still make it look like a fine piece of metal. That artistry in this model is fanstastic.

@VonMudra If the Ruby is going to make an appearance, is the CZ 27 going to make it in?

If I remember right, they were used quite a bit in Panzer crews and elsewhere.

The patch is focused on the Normandy theater, more specifically the British/Commonwealth sector of Normandy. So no, no Italian faction in the offing. If we ever get to the Italian theater, then yes, but that would be many years away :p
