Falaise Gap and the retreat. Here we see a motley group of SS, Heer, and FJ. Of interest is the FJ using his field cap to hold on leaves and twigs for camo ;)

Time for a double post, but an important one:

Today, Kapitan Józef Kowalski, the 113 year old, died in his nursing home. He was the last surviving veteran of the Polish Soviet war, serving in the 22nd Uhlan Regiment at the Battle of Komarów, the largest traditional cavalry battle of the 20th Century, in which 1,500 Polish cavalrymen defeated the 15,000 man Konarmeria, helping turn the tide of the war. He went on to serve in the 1939 campaign, survive the German concentration camps and the Communist period, and on his 110th birthday was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.

May he rest in peace.

I've seen this painting before, and it always strikes me as odd. There is a large russian attack in front and yet only one person appears to care or be firing at it, no one is manning the MG, and there's some guy who apparently sees Russians behind them but no one seems to notice or care either.

More just an artist with a weird imagination of what combat looks like ;)

Panzergrenaidiers of the Panzer Lehr Division in Normandy. Essentially the top quality German panzer division in the Normandy Campaign, with the entire division made up of training and demonstration school staff, most of whom were highly decorated veterans. The division was destroyed in Operation Cobra when their tank assembly area was directly hit, by pure chance, by the american preliminary carpet bombing (they lost 70% of their tanks in one day, in what was probably the only effective air v tank attack of the campaign), and never reestablished it's elite status afterwards.

As it says in image, Italian troops during the assualt on Stalino in 1941. The Italian Expeditionary Force in Russia was commanded by the top Italian General of the war, Giovanni Messe. He led them well, but continued to plead to Mussolini to pull them out, knowing that the Italian Army was ill-suited to combat in Russia. Mussolini, of course, transferred Messe away (who would go on to lead an excellent defense of Tunisia against the British, and then switch sides and lead the pro-allied Italian forces through to the end of the war), and then promptly sent more troops, leading to the disaster at Stalingrad.
